In Afghanistan Corporal Reid Macfarland kills fellow G.I. Sergeant First Class Tim Dean in a friendly fire incident in which he sent the killing drone. Suffering from nightmares that he feels he deserves and ignoring the advice of his counselor, a despondent Reid visits the widow Parker in Castle Creek, Pennsylvania to show respect, apologize, and offer to help the widow mother of a young daughter Natalie with whatever she needs. She angrily tells him to leave but her elderly tired helper Harris Briggs persuades the lad to hang around and likewise convinces his employer they could use the help.

Parker reluctantly assigns Reid to work in her greenhouse that she hopes to turn into a thriving business. Though he only he has a month of leave before returning to Fort Knox, he diligently works at making her greenhouse succeed. As each heals from the tragedy that haunts both Parker and Reid; Briggs, Nat and Chance the dog like the soldier. However as they fall in love, his guilt and her anger leave both of them unable to move on with their grief.

This is a strong and heartwarming military second chance at life (and love) family drama. The protagonists are fully developed with each suffering from the friendly fire death of her husband; while the eccentric support cast enhances the insightful storyline as the aftermath of war comes home to Pennsylvania
